How Far Is Merzouga from Marrakech?

Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech. Without stops, the drive takes 9 to 10 hours. However, nobody should do it in one go. The road climbs over the High Atlas, winds through mountain villages and passes some of the best sights in Morocco. For this reason, almost every Merzouga desert tour splits the journey in two, with a night in the Dades Valley or near the Todra Gorge.

On a map, the distance looks short. However, in reality, mountain curves and village speed limits make the average speed low. Therefore, plan days, not hours.

The Route from Marrakech to Merzouga, Stop by Stop

1. The Tizi n’Tichka Pass (High Atlas)

An hour after leaving Marrakech, the road starts climbing into the High Atlas. The Tizi n’Tichka pass reaches 2,260 metres, with wide views over Berber villages and terraced valleys. In addition, in winter the peaks are often white with snow.

2. Ait Ben Haddou

This fortified village of earth houses is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most photographed places in Morocco. For example, films such as Gladiator were shot here. Afterwards, walk up to the old granary at the top for the best view. Alternatively, you can visit it on our day trip from Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou.

3. Ouarzazate

Known as the “door of the desert”, Ouarzazate is also home to big film studios and the Taourirt Kasbah. As a result, it is a good place for lunch before heading east.

4. The Dades Valley and the Valley of Roses

Past Ouarzazate, the road then follows a green ribbon of palm groves, kasbahs and rose fields. Then, most tours spend the first night in the Dades Valley, among red rock formations and quiet guesthouses.

5. The Todra Gorge

On day two, you walk between the towering rock walls of the Todra Gorge, with a clear river at your feet. Besides, it is cool and shady, even in summer.

6. Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi Dunes

After Erfoud, the landscape suddenly opens up and the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. Some dunes rise to about 150 metres. Finally, you arrive in the afternoon, meet your camels and ride into the dunes for sunset.

How to Get from Marrakech to Merzouga

Private tour with a driver (recommended)

A private desert tour from Marrakech is the most comfortable option. In fact, you have your own 4×4 or minivan, stop wherever you want and travel at your own pace. Furthermore, hotels, the camel ride and the desert camp are all arranged for you.

Shared group tour

Shared tours are cheaper. However, the bus is often full, the schedule is fixed and stops are short. Still, they suit solo travellers on a tight budget.

Bus or self-drive

Long-distance buses connect Marrakech and Merzouga. However, the trip is long and you miss every stop on the way. Similarly, driving yourself is possible, yet mountain roads and night driving can be tiring. Either way, you still need to book a camel ride and camp on arrival.

Your Night in the Merzouga Desert Camp

Above all, the night in the Sahara is the highlight of the trip. For example, camps range from simple Berber tents to comfortable luxury tents with private bathrooms and real beds. After the sunset camel ride, for instance, you share a hot tagine, listen to drums around the fire and look at a sky full of stars. So tell us your style when you book and we will choose the right camp for you.

  • Standard camp: traditional tents and, in addition, shared bathrooms.
  • Luxury camp: private bathroom, hot shower and, above all, proper beds.
  • Extras: for example, quad bikes, sandboarding or a 4×4 tour around the dunes.

Best Time to Visit Merzouga

  • Spring (March–May): warm days and cool nights. As a result, it is one of the best seasons.
  • Autumn (September–November): pleasant temperatures and clear skies, so it is also excellent.
  • Winter (December–February): sunny days but cold nights, close to freezing. Therefore, bring warm layers; there may be snow on the Atlas pass.
  • Summer (June–August): very hot in the afternoon. Even so, the trip is still possible if you ride early and late in the day.

What to Pack for a Desert Tour

  • A small backpack for the camp night, since big luggage stays in the car
  • A warm jacket, because the desert night is cold even in spring
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and, besides, a hat or scarf against sun and sand
  • Comfortable shoes or, alternatively, sandals for the dunes
  • A power bank and, of course, a torch
  • Cash for tips and, also, small purchases
